How to Maintain Your Sanity While Working From Home

During the pandemic, many Americans transitioned to a work-from-home model. Previously, working from home seemed like a fantasy for most white-collar workers because employers wanted to keep them under supervision. However, amid public safety regulations, this became common practice nationwide.

As the pandemic brought the world to a standstill, employers had no choice but to get comfortable with the idea of shutting down the office.  Meanwhile, employees quickly realized that working from home comes with a lot of inconveniences that you wouldn’t normally encounter at the office. Distractions abound, particularly if you have kids or pets.

For some, it can be difficult to establish an efficient workflow. The lack of social interaction also eliminates the serendipitous encounters that usually spark productive ideas. Not to mention the mental toll isolation can take on people in quarantine.

That being said, working from home is usually a net positive. You just need to make a few adjustments to maximize your efficiency and motivation.

Dress to Impress

Most motivation deficits can be chalked up to a lack of structure. A lot of people depend on routines to provide a framework for their productivity. Typically, when people go into the office they pay close attention to their wardrobe, hygiene, and personal appearance. However, when they work from home it can be easy to fall into the trap of wearing your pajamas all day long. It’s important to avoid this. Dress to impress. Even if you’re the only one who gets to see it.

The freedom of working from home comes with the luxury of wearing informal clothing. However, without the physical differentiation of your home and workplace, it can be difficult to find motivation and work-life balance. You’ll find that dressing up during work hours helps create a mental boundary between “you” time and “work” time.

You don’t need to wear a suit (unless you want to, of course), but anything a few steps above your normal home attire will help trick your mind.

Prioritize Healthy Habits

You told yourself you would be more active, but it’s difficult to break the momentum of inactivity. A good way to encourage yourself to honor your health commitments is to incorporate them into your google calendar. Treat your health as if it were an important meeting at work. You wouldn’t think about blowing off an important Zoom call, so don’t blow off time for a healthy meal or a brief walk either. The key is to adopt the mindset that your 1:00 PM time slot is as important as that client call.

From the time you start your workday, you will know that there is an important appointment coming up and it will help you plan the day around it. As for the actual time slot, it doesn’t matter what you do. You can do yoga, Zumba, pushups, mediation, or just stare out the window. The important thing is to treat your personal hour as a priority. Because it should be.

Communicate

It’s true that it gets harder to maintain team communication and accountability while working remotely, but this can work to your advantage. Working without supervision is a great way for overachievers to stand out. Take it upon yourself to ensure that nothing falls through the cracks. Overcommunicate your expectations, deadlines, and follow up continuously when tasks are pending.  The point is not to be annoying, but to make sure that every team member has what they need for the tasks at hand.
